The thing that bigshot employers seem to like most about millennials is their adaptability. As a result, true to the standard, I intend for the 'point' of this blog to change all the time.
Just to keep things simple, let's just say what I do here is totally pointless.
Hopefully you'll love it all the same so it doesn't really matter.
Welcome to the Diaries of a Millennial. As the title suggests this is effectively the outlet for my stream of consciousness, and I will be covering everything that comes to mind that I deem even remotely ready for public consumption. So be ready for that.
What do you need to know about me?
My name is Jules. I am a millennial. What is a millennial I hear you ask? Well if you are indeed asking that and you were born anywhere between the early 1980s and the early 2000s then you had better educate yourself, because YOU are a millennial too.
We are what the clever kids of the business world call "Generation Y" (our parents being Generation X). The actual years you have to have been born between to fit into this classification are a little iffy. But recent publications suggest that most people believe that a millennial is someone born between 1982 and 1997. Basically it's anyone who was a young adult during the noughties.
Just to clarify - if you are between the ages of 17 and 31 - you are a millennial.
What this means is that (on average) we are more supportive of liberal social policies, like same-sex marriage than any generation before us. In the UK it means that we are more supportive of the push to legalise marijuana than Generation X. According to the Economist, being a millennial in America again means a push for the likes of same-sex marriage, though interestingly it means you are (on average) less tolerant of abortion than the previous generation.
These are all just facts and figures. Here's the good stuff,
According a LinkedIn blog post last (2013), we as millennials are better multi-taskers, more tech-savvy and we are better connected. This makes us the holy grail for employers looking to employ better PR strategies. The majority of us (unless you've been living under a rock - which is good for you) know our way around a computer, Mac, iPad, iPod, iPhone, Android etc. The fact that we can text and walk, or send an email with looking at what buttons we're pushing may be sad in reality, but in the business world it means we are activating and training parts of our brains that could be very useful.
Most importantly, that guy at University or high school who you talked to a couple of times and added on facebook but haven't talked to since? He could become the CEO of your future client...and you're still facebook friends.
We stay connected and the majority of the time (as we sit with our mouse hovered over the unfriend button) we wonder why we keep the facebook friends we'll never see again. I obviously can't say for certain that the girl you met interrailing through Eastern Europe (the one you added on facebook) is going to be the fresh-faced new artist you needed for your gallery next week....but there's chance.
You may call me a blind optimist or a needy social-mediaite, but if I meet someone who stands out, be it in intellect, charisma, talent or je ne sais quois? and we have a decent enough conversation - yes! I will add them on facebook. Because we are the well-connected millennials and you never know who the guy you shared a spliff with the other night is going to become.
The downside to millennials is that apparently we're more needy and expect total transparency with our employers. But every new toy has its bugs.
So there. I've covered the basis of this blog I think. If you have the attention span of a horsefly RESUME READING HERE!!!
To Summarise:
- Millennials are people born between 1982 and 1997
- I was born in 1993 - I am a millennial
- In this blog I will right about anything that I, as a millennial, deal with in my daily life and in my brain
- This is going to cover a BROAD spread of things so hopefully there'll be something in these pages for everyone. To name a few topics I will likely/may or may not cover:
*Current Affairs and Politics
*Latest Music
*Music that people should like anyway
*Fashion
*LGBT lifestyle
*Travel
*Stories
*Rants about my/other peoples' social lives
If any of that looks good to you then stay tuned. The majority of the time I am actually going to know what I'm talking about so no bullshit here.
